Production & Editing Updates
11th November- Today I started looking through the footage that I already had from the dance shows that I have done, to see how much I could put into my documentary. I did have a lot of footage however I did want to be behind the camera (rather than in the dances that I will include in the documentary) for the majority of my documentary, meaning that I would have to try and film the dances at competitions and shows that I am not in.

16th & 20th November- I began editing the
footage from the shows that I already had. I picked a background song just to try out at this point and I will not be using this for my final cut. I started my editing on iMovie on my MacBook Pro, as I am familiar with this software from previous projects including my AS Media coursework.
20th, 22nd & 23rd November- This week when i went to the studios, I filmed the dances that we were learning. I don't know whether I will use all of the footage from all of the dances yet or just snippets from each dance but I wanted to film every dance that we lear
nt so that I have a wide variety of footage to narrow down when editing my documentary. the classes that I filmed the dances in were street, commercial, contemporary, jazz and competition group.
23rd & 30th November- In these lessons I started to edit the footage that I filmed in my dance classes the previous week. I didn't actually use much of this footage, however I cut small sections out to include in my documentary. Whilst editing, I didn't really have a specific order for my clips to go in, but I did try to alternate the footage from in class to the footage from shows/ competitions rather than having a long section of dances in class and then a long section of the competition and show dances. By doing this, I hope that it keeps my audience watching, rather than getting bored of watching a section that has all the same kind of footage. At this point, I realised that I may need more footage than I origi
nally thought- probably because of the amount that I cut out. So, I plan to film more in dance classes in a couple of weeks time. I wanted to edit along the side of filming so that I knew how much more footage (if any) was needed at what stage. I originally planned to just film in my dance classes for one week, but because I began editing before I finished filming, I knew that I needed some more footage to include.
4th & 6th December- Again, on these two days, I filmed some more footage in some of my dance classes, because I didn't have enough from filming last time. When it comes to editing, I probably won't use all of the footage but by filming as much as I can, this will give me a lot of footage to chose from.
7th December- Today, I filmed Angharad practising her solo, for a college audition. I am also going to interview her and include both of these in my final cut. There is quite a lot of footage from her solo that i will be able to include in my documentary
which is good, considering I cut out quite a lot of footage from the group dances in class.
14th December- I filmed my interview with Angharad. I filmed over 30 minutes of footage however, not all of it can be included because it is just us talking about what she can say. Before filming, I planned some questions that I wanted her to answer as well as some topics I wanted her to talk about. I didn't tell her these before we began so what she said on camera was not scripted and exactly what she thought. I think that the filming process went well because I managed to film everything I wanted to, e.g. all of the topics that I wanted her to talk about in the documentary. I only got four types of shot in the interview scenes- close up, medium shot, high angle and a side profile shot. Looking back now, I could have varied the camera angles more to give more types of shots to include which may have made my final cut more interesting, rather than having the interview scenes at the same four angles all the time. Although, as I didn't use that many types of shots for this, it means that it shouldn't look too messy.
15th, 16th & 18th December- I edited the interview sections. This took me quite a while because I had over 35 minutes footage. I knew that I only needed around 3 minutes of this to go with the dance footage that I have already edited. When I started editing, I realised that part of the interview scenes were slightly out of focus, but I will still use this footage in my documentary as it isn't too bad but maybe I should re-film these scenes if I get time to before the final cut is due in on 25th January. As I went through, I cut the sections out that I wanted to keep in (as this was less than what needed deleting) then I deleted what was remaining that I didn't need/ want to include in my documentary. I then put the interview clips into the dance footage that i have previously edited. I didn't really have a specific order for my clips to go in however I wanted to have the interview sections in small sections in between the dance footage and by do
ing this, I hope that it keeps my audience watching and interested rather than getting bored of watching a section that has all the same kind of footage.
19th December- I watched my documentary to check whether I needed to delete any clips or change the order or anything before uploading it to my blog. I decided to change the order of a few of the interview clips but other than that I was pleased with my first cut. Obviously there is still quite a lot that I need to change and improve before uploading my final cut but when I get my feedback it will help me make these improvements.
January- I found new background music for my documentary. Rather than one song repeated, I chose three songs without the lyrics so that the audience can focus on the dialogue and the dancing throughout. I then created the title for my documentary. I used a website called 1001 fonts to create my logo. I also used a silhouette of a dancer on my logo.
